1984 meets Wag the Dog

The Patriot Conspiracy is about an American president who seeks to abolish cash and establish a universal credit/debit card in order to gain unprecedented access to every citizen's private life. The story is told from the point of view of Maggie Trent, the wife of a young senator, as she struggles to understand both politics and her husband.

Maggie records the odyssey of an enthusiastic couple, ready to set Washington on its ear, through triumphs and tragedy. Robert Trent must choose between conflicting loyalties—to his party, to his principles, and to his family.

We follow Maggie's transformation from observer to participant, as this naïve wife of an ambitious politician comes to the painful realization that it is up to her to challenge the all-invasive government. The shocking ending is a wake-up call to those who disregard the issue of privacy rights.

The Patriot Conspiracy: gain convenience and lose your life - A novel of political intrigue

It sounds like a real convenience, not to have to carry money, and a safety issue as well. Furthermore, everyone likes the feeling of getting something for nothing: how about all those credit cards that award points for everything from "free" gas to airline tickets or a deposit toward a name brand, made in America automobile?

You can pick and choose what you want when you redeem those points. How would you like to translate them into a cash reduction on your income tax? That's right: every time you make a purchase using your credit card, you'd be earning rewards towards your IRS payments.

Keep in mind: if it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

When young Democratic Senator Robert Trent and his wife, Maggie, arrive on the Washington scene, their energetic and and idealistic attitudes help them believe they can make a difference. Stubbornly, they hold out against opposition pressure to apply for the CyberCard, which soon begins to replace money in every transaction. As the ripple effect sets in, cash and coins become scarce and there are rumors that the mint is simply not producing them. It becomes more difficult for small businesses to survive: how about the gardeners, tradesmen, and Farmers' Markets where cash is the preferred method of a transaction? Even panhandlers missed by few, will be out of luck. When a barter system begins, will that be outlawed as well?

As Maggie Trent struggles to maintain her sense of humor while weaving her way through her childless marriage, politics, the Washington social scene and a four-year plan that announces the federal government will prepare everyone's tax return free of charge and with a two percent rebate, the reader is swept along into the intrigue. Will Maggie and Robert survive these complicated times? Can personal integrity surmount ambition? How much does and should the government know about us? Is personal privacy a thing of the past?

The thoughtful reader will continue to question, long after closing the book.

Born in Hackensack, NJ, Carole attended Stanford University's French immersion program in Tours, France. She met her husband, Rod, who mistook her for being French, in California where she was teaching. Rod's home was Quebec, so back they went to Montreal where he was a professor of international finance at the University of Montreal.

"The idea came to me," she said, "what if we didn't have money? How would we pay for things? Could we barter for everything? Perhaps we'd need one credit card."

And the plot was born.

This book had an intriguing and fascinating plot. The characters were well developed and very human in their qualities and flaws. The politics and financial information was informative while still being plausible in this crazy world.

Great reading. Well placed facts. Humor intrigue and well cast characters. Carole defines the Washington political climate very "spot on" You will laugh, cry, and get angry with the Washington scene.
